Academy launches March 2, 2010
February 24, 2010
In January of 2010, the Advancement Project was chosen by the City of Los Angeles through an open, competitive RFP process to coordinate and implement LAVITA. The Academy will consist of a “basic 101” 14-week, 140 hour training focusing on Personal Development, Applied Theory, Direct Practice, Broader Policy Initiatives and Concrete Tasks. In addition, advanced courses will be offered for more experienced intervention practitioners.
The Advancement Project’s Urban Peace Academy/Los Angeles Violence Intervention Training Academy (LAVITA) will launch on March 2, 2010 with the beginning of the Spring Basic 101 Session. The details of the session are:
Dates: March 2nd – June 3rd
Days: Every Tuesday and Thursday
Time: 10 am to 3:30 pm
Location: UCLA Downtown Labor Center (675 S. Park View St., Los Angeles, CA 90057)
Parking: Located in the parking garage on the corner of Wilshire Blvd. & Parkview St.
Currently, the Academy training is geared solely for intervention agencies under contract with the GRYD office. Application and interviews for Spring session attendees ended on February 25, 2010. Pending successful completion of the training, participants will receive certification to work under contract with the Mayor’s Office of Gang Reduction and Youth Development (GRYD).
As the Academy training advances, opportunities for participation by gang intervention agencies and individuals may become available. If you are interested in attending the training as a participant or instructor, please send your information (name, title, agency, contact information and/or resume) to Fernando Rejón at frejon@advanceproj.org.
