LOS ANGELES - In the early morning of January 15, 2010, nearly 800 Angelenos from diverse walks of life and service to their community will gather together for the 39th annual YMCA Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Brotherhood Breakfast to reflect on the relevancy of Dr. King's message and honor those working hard to realize his dream in today's Los Angeles. The program will also feature an important announcement about a new YMCA urban branch.
Father Greg Boyle of Homeboy Industries - now the largest gang intervention program in the country- will be this year's recipient of the YMCA Brotherhood Award for his enduring commitment to transforming the lives of gang-involved youth in Los Angeles. Civil rights advocates Constance Rice and Molly Munger of The Advancement Project will share the organization's Human Dignity Award for their efforts in promoting equality in education through legislative initiatives as well as the creation of 80 new schools in underserved urban areas from which children were being bussed into other communities for their education.
Antonia Hernandez, President and CEO of the California Community Foundation will provide the keynote speech at the breakfast event, which has become a tradition for civic, business, clergy and community leaders in Los Angeles. The program will be emceed by Ezunial Burts, Secretary of the Board of Directors for the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles and will include a special invocation by a youth volunteer from the Weingart YMCA Wellness and Aquatics Center with brief remarks by W.J. Ellison, Chairman and CEO of Ellison Machinery Company. The morning will be capped off with musical performances by Cristi Black, Tim Owens and multi-Grammy award-winning songwriter Tony Coleman which will feature the traditional benediction, We Shall Overcome.
Father Boyle, Molly Munger and Constance Rice as well as keynote speaker Antonia Hernandez were all chosen to be part of this year's program because of their inspiring and consistent commitment to community building in Los Angeles and because so many of their goals parallel those of the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles, said YMCA President Larry Rosen. Homeboy Industries, The Advancement Project, the California Community Foundation and the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles are creating new paradigms to better serve Angelenos giving them access to programs that build character, promote healthy living, and support positive life skills and encourage the acceptance of responsibility. The YMCA Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Brotherhood Breakfast brings all of us to the table to be reminded that as brethren, together we may be able to affect large-scale change in Los Angeles.
