Support from individuals is critical to preserving our independence, our ability to push for change even if it means alienating influential public figures and potential sources of funding. While our first approach is to try to build consensus, advocating change in large-scale systems always stirs resistance from powerful groups, and foundations and other institutional funders also at times shy away from controversial or politically-charged issues.
